Automate Weed Removal

The Heibjerg robot is a concept for removing weeds in gravel or stone-paved areas in an autonomous, safe, and efficient manner.

Automating weeding in gravel and stone-paved areas have many benefits. It reduces the time spent on manual weeding which is associated with pain-inducing working positions and is a time-consuming task. Due to the high cost of labor, a robotic solution has the potential to reduce the cost associated with weed removal or free up time to do more important work.

A Green, Safe Alternative

Using a robot is an energy-efficient solution for weed removal. It is capable of spot treatment, not wasting energy on already clean areas. Using hot water, instead of herbicides, also reduces the environmental impact of weed removal. Water-based weeding also eliminates the risk of fires, known from traditional weed burning.

The Robot

The Heibjerg weeding robot removes weeds from gravel or stone-paved driveways and patios. It does so using hot water and steam to kill the weeds before they mature.

Weed killing Using Boiling Water

The working principle is the same as a regular gas or electric weed burner. Heat damages the surface of the weed. This disrupts the weed's natural ability to self-regulate. This will eventually kill the weed completely. By using water as the heat-transmitting substance there is no chance of igniting surrounding wood or structures. It is a safe and eco-friendly alternative to a weed burner or poison.

Navigation Using GPS

The robot navigates complex areas using GPS and vision. No perimeter wires are needed. The location-aware robot can navigate complex patio layouts. Since the robot knows where it is, it can systematically treat the working area, without skipping corners.

Where to use the Heibjerg robot

The Heibjerg Robot is well suited for large gravel and stone paved areas, that need to be kept weed free. It is designed to work with areas >1000m2. It is suited for most areas where there are no high-speed moving objects such as cars. It could be used in the following areas:

church or cemeteries site

Cemeteries

residential or industrial complex

Housing Complexes

Park facilities

About Heibjerg

The motivation and team

The Company

Our goal is to automate the repetitive mundane tasks in garden complexes. Freeing up time for the worker to do the hard tasks ill-suited for automation. Our initial focus is on replacing the task of weed burning in gravel and stone-paved areas.

Initially, our focus is on solutions for groundsmen and commercial sites, but in time we hope to create a solution for the consumer market. The green transition and EU legislation are prohibiting the use of herbicides. As a result, many sites are forced to rethink their pavement weeding. Robots are a new and beneficial way to solve this issue, without significantly increasing labor needs.

The project started in January of 2023 and was incorporated as Heibjerg Aps in September of 2023. Heibjerg is in the early stage of development and is currently developing the first robotic prototypes. Denmark has placed itself as one of the top countries for robotics technology. It has an ecosystem with strong research institutions, support organizations, and networks within the robotics field.
